GICLEE, WHAT IS IT? |
| FIRST: the word is pronounced Zhee-clay or (zee clay). Heavy on the Z The word giclee dates back to the late 1980s and is a French term meaning "spray or squirt" which refers to the digital printing process. I cringe every time I hear this word butchered. I recently attended a presentation of a company that sells giclees in great quantities and no one at the company could pronounce the word. Giclee printing is recognized as the next best thing to owning an original. And you can print one or several at a time without having to make the 100 or 1000 piece commitment as with other printing methods. Although on a print by print basis they are more expensive than other methods. A particular size giclee may be $50 to $75. and the same size offset Litho may be $3.00; but you can buy 1 to 10 instead of 500 to 1000. And the quality is exceptional. It is generally archival with a long life and usually is closely controlled by the artist. Your work can be printed on watercolor paper or canvas. . There are a number of places on the internet that do this type of printing so check out several before you decide..One place is a friend dye2art@gmail.com ask for Randy
